Welcome to the Longwood SAIF at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Our goal is to provide state-of-the-art small animal imaging services to researchers in the Longwood Medical Area of Harvard Medical School. These services include multi-modality imaging, advanced data analysis, image fusion resources, and a satellite animal facility for longitudinal studies. A detailed description of our instruments and services are provided on this website, and we welcome questions and comments.

During design of the Longwood SAIF, we solved the logistical problems of importing animals from other institutions and have developed a streamlined system to expedite the movement of animals into the facility. The new, long-term satellite animal facility is now open. Details are available under the Checklist and Directions pages, including all necessary forms and permissions for transporting animals into our facility.

Our goal is to make this a one-stop service for you. Simply bring us the animals, and we will take care of all anesthesia and imaging, and will assist you with data analysis and display. You will leave with all the data you need on a CD, DVD, or USB memory stick. We also have state-of-the art data analysis and fusion facilities to assist you.

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact the Longwood SAIF by phone at 617-667-6020 or via email at info@LongwoodSAIF.org.

Shown is a medium-resolution SPECT/CT from a wild-type CD-1 mouse injected with sodium Tc-99m-pertechnetate (Tc-99m-Ptnt), an isotope that recapitulates iodide uptake in cells and tissues. Tc-99m-Ptnt is an inexpensive, readily-available reagent that can be used in conjunction with expression of the NaI symporter to track cells and to quantify viral expression of transgenes in vivo. Four hours after injection of 1 mCi of Tc-99m-Ptnt, the thyroid gland and stomach, which have high endogenous expression of the NaI symporter, demonstrate dramatic uptake relative to other tissues and organs. The SPECT/CT image shown was created using a 30-minute acquisition and 30-minute reconstruction, although similar image quality can be obtained with shorter acquisition and reconstruction times.
